Day Trip : The Pearl of the Peninsula

...Otherwise known as Quilcene. With street names like Linger Longer Road, you may want to stay awhile.

The community, a population of about 500 folks, is located on the Olympic Peninsula at the head of Quilcene Bay, an arm of the seawater-filled glacial valley of the Hood Canal. Early inhabitants of the area were the Twana people, inhabiting the length of the Hood Canal, and rarely invading other tribes. The Quilcene ("salt-water people") were a distinct band of the Twana people.

The Tubal Cain Mining Company in 1902 claimed that Quilcene would become the center for the smelting of iron, copper, gold, and manganese that was expected to be found in the Olympic Mountains; however, little ore was ever discovered.

Quilcene ties with Sequim/Port Angeles as the kick-off point for Olympic Mountain Adventures. AKA, my stomping grounds for epic river runs in the winter and warm-season altitude adventures ...and all the in-between.

So many options!

Sledding off of Lord's Lake Road:

If sledding strikes your fancy, head up Lord's Lake Road toward the Mt. Zion trailhead after a mild snow. 4WD of course. Do not let your 13 year-old son do donuts in the snow with your Honda.

Lunch at the Gear Head Deli:

A must-do after any adventure: grab burgers or sandwiches at the Gear Head Deli. Specializing in in-house smoked meats and pulled pork, you cannot go wrong with the varied menu.

My son loves the F150. I am a sucker for the Prius. Something for everyone!

The Gear Head Deli has indoor seating and a spacious outdoor deck overlooking the beautifully landscaped Pearl Thrasher Memorial Garden (open to the public and complete with several sculptures). (Check for changes due to covid, etc)

Worthington Park and the Linger Longer Stage:

Worthington Park is another Quilcene gem. A hot

venue for concerts, weddings, and wine-tastings, the Park serves as a community spot for a plethora of events- including the annual Scarecrow Contest.
